Michael Douglas' new memoir has finally revealed the identity of the Basic Instinct co-star he secretly dated while still married. The actress was photographed in Los Angeles with her husband on the same day the book exposed their decades-old romance.

The 82-year-old actor has just released his memoir, One Helluva Ride, and it is proving to be every bit as revealing as its title suggests. Among the stories Douglas chose to revisit is a romance that began while he was making one of the most talked-about erotic thrillers of the 1990s.
Directed by Paul Verhoeven, Basic Instinct centered on homicide detective Nick Curran, played by Douglas, as he investigated a murder involving crime novelist Catherine Tramell, played by Sharon Stone.

The Movie That Had Everyone Looking in the Wrong Direction
Stone's performance opposite Douglas generated enormous attention, and the pair’s charged scenes fueled years of speculation that their chemistry extended beyond the screen. But according to Douglas' memoir, the public was looking in the wrong direction.

The actor wrote that people were so focused on the possibility of something happening between him and Stone that they overlooked the real relationship unfolding elsewhere in the cast. At the time, Douglas was married to Diandra Luker, although he said the marriage was already deeply troubled and that the pair had separated and were living separate lives.
He Says He Fell Hard — But Kept It Hidden
Douglas recalled developing a close connection with another actress while the movie was being filmed in San Francisco. The relationship was deliberately kept away from the rest of the cast and crew, with Douglas saying the two of them "took great pains to hide" what was happening.
He described spending hours together away from the set, talking, getting to know each other and enjoying one another's company. The age difference was considerable. Douglas was nearly 20 years older than the actress, who was making her film debut in Basic Instinct.

The situation also carried an obvious complication: Douglas was still legally married. According to the memoir, the actress initially "was unwilling to get involved" with a married man, but Douglas assured her that he and Luker had formally separated.
He wrote that they were both seeing other people and living separate lives, and that they understood their marriage was coming to an end. Still, Douglas admitted that his feelings became much stronger than he initially expected. "The truth is, I fell very hard for Jeanne despite our nearly 20-year age difference."

He continued:
"In fact, I was ready to officially leave my wife for Jeanne. I was crazy about her."

Douglas ultimately decided against immediately leaving his marriage to begin another serious relationship. He later explained that, after nearly 20 years of marriage, he believed making such a leap would have been "the worst thing" he could do at that point.
The Actress Finally Steps Out — With Her Husband
That brings the story to the image that has now become particularly interesting in light of the memoir. On the same Tuesday that One Helluva Ride was released, the woman at the center of Douglas’ revelation was photographed in Los Angeles while stepping out for coffee with her husband, actor Leland Orser.
The actress, now 63, kept the outing casual, wearing a simple black T-shirt and fitted jeans while protecting her eyes from the California sun with dark sunglasses. Her dark hair was pulled back into a low bun as she walked alongside Orser — a strikingly ordinary-looking outing considering that, elsewhere that same day, a decades-old Hollywood secret had suddenly become public.
The actress is Jeanne Tripplehorn. Tripplehorn played Dr. Beth Garner, the police psychologist and complicated love interest of Douglas' character in Basic Instinct.
Her appearance with Orser marked her first reported public sighting since Douglas revealed that she, rather than Stone, had been his secret romantic partner during the production.

Their Romance Ended When the Cameras Stopped
Douglas' account makes clear that the relationship did not continue indefinitely after the film wrapped. He wrote that "My relationship with Jeanne lasted through production, then we went our separate ways."
He nevertheless spoke warmly about his former co-star, describing her as "an amazing actress and a truly terrific woman" and saying he felt fortunate to have spent time with her.
The affair also made some of the movie's intimate scenes more complicated. Douglas recalled that because the two were romantically involved away from the set, filming their characters’ intimate scenes in front of the crew could feel surprisingly awkward for Tripplehorn.

He wrote that she became so nervous during one sequence that she laughed uncontrollably before eventually settling into the scene. Douglas also recalled that there were no intimacy coordinators at the time. He said the scene was carefully rehearsed, with the actors agreeing on each movement beforehand and checking in during takes.
The actor specifically remembered asking Tripplehorn afterward whether she was okay because the scene was apparently intense.
She Built a Life Far Away From That Hollywood Chapter
Tripplehorn's relationship with Douglas ended years before she met the man who would become her husband. She and Orser met while working on the 1998 comedy Very Bad Things, roughly six years after her relationship with Douglas had ended.

The pair married in 2000 in Tripplehorn's hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Two years later, they welcomed their son, August, and they have remained together since then. By contrast, Douglas' first marriage to Luker eventually ended in divorce in 1995. He later married Catherine Zeta-Jones in 2000, and the couple shares two children, Dylan and Carys.

Douglas has said that he had little contact with Tripplehorn in the years after Basic Instinct, which made his decision to revisit their relationship in his memoir particularly notable.
Before including the story, however, he said he called Tripplehorn and asked for her permission. "She said yes," Douglas told PEOPLE. That detail is important because the revelation was not presented by Douglas as an attempt to embarrass his former co-star. He explained that the people mentioned in his memoir were individuals who had been meaningful parts of his life.

The Memoir Reveals Another Long-Hidden Hollywood Romance
Tripplehorn was not the only former co-star whose relationship with Douglas received a new chapter in One Helluva Ride. The actor also admitted that he had an affair with Kathleen Turner while the two were making the 1984 classic Romancing the Stone. At the time, Douglas was still married to Luker, while Turner was dating real estate mogul Jay Weiss.
Douglas wrote that he and Turner initially became friends before their attraction grew into something more while they were filming in Mexico. He recalled sneaking into Turner's hotel room after their exhausting days of shooting, while the rest of the group had gone to bed.

The relationship was kept secret from their colleagues, including co-star Danny DeVito and director Robert Zemeckis. According to Douglas, Luker eventually became suspicious and traveled to the Mexican set with their young son Cameron.
The encounter between Luker and Turner effectively brought the affair to an end, although Douglas and Turner remained professionally connected and went on to make The Jewel of the Nile in 1985 and The War of the Roses in 1989.

For decades, the two maintained the public version that nothing had happened. Douglas now says that version was a lie they maintained in an effort to protect his wife and son.

Turner Had Her Own Take on the Revelation
Turner, now 72, responded to Douglas’ confession with considerably less drama than the memoir might suggest. In a statement to PEOPLE, she said:
"Good heavens, what a fuss about something 40 years ago! I love Michael, and I look forward to enjoying the book."
Her response underlined just how much time has passed since the events Douglas described. The revelations about Turner and Tripplehorn are among the more personal stories in One Helluva Ride, a memoir that also explores Douglas' childhood, his relationship with his father Kirk Douglas, his years of drug use, his career and his family life.
But the Basic Instinct revelation carries a particularly curious twist because the woman the public had spent decades associating with Douglas’ on-set chemistry was not the woman he says he was secretly dating.

And now, the first glimpse of Tripplehorn after the revelation shows her simply going about her life — coffee in hand and walking beside the husband she met years after that chapter of Hollywood history had already ended.
