Ethan Hawke thought he was ready for one of life's most common milestones. He wasn't. The actor recently reflected on how emotional it was to walk daughter Maya Hawke down the aisle.

Months after his daughter, Maya Hawke, said “I do,” Ethan Hawke is reflecting on what it meant to walk her down the aisle, admitting it was quite painful.

Speaking on “Today with Jenna & Sheinelle,” Hawke candidly confessed his realizations during that bittersweet moment he gave away his daughter to musician Christian Lee Hutson in a surprise Valentine’s Day wedding.

“I don’t know if you feel this way, but some of the most profound moments of your life are the most common,” Hawke reflected when asked how he felt that day.

“It’s really simple,” he continued. “Your oldest daughter is getting married, so you’re in a situation that humanity has been doing forever, and yet your heart is ripping open.”

Hawke also admitted he had different expectations than what actually transpired. “The really mysterious part about it is I thought that it would be moving because it would be this great bonding moment between the two of us,” he said. But what he realized was his daughter was just focused on the groom.

The tradition of a father walking the bride down the aisle dates back to when women were considered property, symbolizing the father transferring ownership to the husband. These days, many couples reinterpret the custom as a gesture of love and family unity instead.

For Hawke, who shares Maya with actress Uma Thurman, it’s both a powerful moment and a painful one. “That’s what’s kind of powerful about it,” he told the hosts of “Today.” “You’re looking backward at this childhood and this time of raising her, and she’s looking forward to her life. And it’s appropriate. It’s right, and it’s...” he paused, before Jenna Bush Hager added, “It kind of hurts.”
