Jennifer Lawrence trimmed her bangs to about an inch above her brows for Dior’s show in Paris. About a week later, Florence Pugh stepped out in New York with a micro fringe of her own.

This fall season, one of the trending hairstyles is shorter bangs, and while several celebrities have stepped out with trimmed fringes that sit just above the brows, stylists say there are some things to consider before jumping on the bandwagon.

The Celebrity Bangs

In late September, Jennifer Lawrence attended Dior’s spring 2027 show in Paris with freshly trimmed bangs. The new, noticeably shorter fringe sat about an inch above her eyebrows and appeared lighter and wispier than her previous styles.

Hairstylist Matthew Sosnowski, who styled her for the show, says he sees hair as "a frame of the canvas," and fringe is one way to provide that.

It wasn't the first time Lawrence updated her bangs. A few weeks earlier, hairstylist Chris Appleton gave her what he called "butterfly bangs" when she attended the LVMH Prize ceremony. It was shorter and airier in the center, winging out around the cheekbones. Over the years, she has also worn Jane Birkin-inspired bangs, curtain fringes, and wispy "U bangs."

Apart from Lawrence, celebrities like Zendaya and Chase Sui Wonders also adopted baby bangs. Harper's Bazaar notes that Zendaya wore them during her Spider-Man press tour in July, and Wonders wore a choppy version to the Venice Film Festival.

Dakota Johnson has been wearing her signature fringe at a brow-revealing length, though Vogue says hers is fuller and denser. Most recently, Florence Pugh debuted a sleek micro fringe just above her eyebrows at a Jaguar event in New York, styled by Hyungsun Ju.

Why Shorter?

Micro bangs, defined by Elle as short bangs that sit above the eyebrows, are the style behind much of this trend. According to Harper’s Bazaar, micro bangs are low-maintenance, effortlessly cool, and they draw attention to the eyes and brows. The shorter the bangs, the better this fall, the outlet says.

Vogue notes that hairstylist Frankie Inverarity predicted earlier this year a rise in “disconnected bangs,” shorter, wispier fringe that sits just above the brows to feel lighter and open up the face.

Vogue adds that a seasonal haircut doesn't have to mean losing length. Sometimes, it says, an inch off the bangs is enough.

What to Know Before You Cut

"There is no wake-up-and-go with bangs," warns stylist Veronica Zinck, while hair artist Gina Rivera notes that bangs require more styling. So if you’re looking for something that requires little commitment, you might reconsider getting a fringe cut. If you want to try it out, Rivera advises doing it gradually, beginning with longer bangs and going shorter if you’re sure you like them.

Hairstylist Chad Cook says the right bangs will also depend on the texture of the hair and its natural growth pattern. The cut that works for straight hair may not be the right cut for wavy or curly hair. He also highlights other important considerations, like cowlicks, hair density, and how much time you’re willing to spend on styling your bangs every morning.

So before taking the plunge, discuss your options with your stylist to find the cut that suits you.
